Make sure your garage door opener is less than 20 years old
If you're looking to buy a second hand door opening system, or perhaps one from a friend to save money on the cost, make sure it's younger than 20 years old. In 1993 a regulation was released that stated all garage doors made after this date had to have reverse safety features. If you want a safe modern automatic door, this is the minimum age to aim for.
Match the horsepower of your opener to your garage door
A standard two-car door garage usually requires an opener which produces just 0.5 horsepower. Heavier wood doors and especially carriage doors may need a slightly stronger opener of around 0.75. If you choose an opener with less HP than you need, it may struggle to lift the door. If you buy a much more powerful device than you need, you may end up paying a higher energy bill for nothing so be sure to check with a technician before making the final decision.
